By Jonathan D. Whitcomb

If you, or someone you know, has seen an apparent living pterosaur, please contact me, Jonathan Whitcomb.

With only one exception, all of my videos on this channel are entirely about modern pterosaurs. Protect Animal Life has grown slowly over the first ten months, since its inception early in 2019, as devoted followers subscribe one by one, yet the great majority of comments have been positive, and comments number in the hundreds.

Of the forty videos on this channel as of January 16, 2020, some of them are about sightings of non-extinct “pterodactyls” in the United States, including (but not limited to) the following states:

Pterosaur Sightings in South Carolina

The four reports from S.C.:

  1. Bishopville, 1984: wingspan about 10-14 feet; no feathers; standing in the middle of a country road, it appeared to be at least 10 feet tall.
  2. In that same general area, about two years later, Susan Wooten witnessed a huge flying creature: “as big as any car and had NO feathers.”
  3. Clinton, about 1994: “I saw a pterosaur as big as a plane, and looked very similar to the sketch created by Susan Wooten.”
  4. Rock Hill area of South Carolina, 2000: “It flew over me & my dog & made a terrifying call.”

Pterodactyl Sightings in Los Angeles

The five reports from L.A. County:

  1. Lakewood, California, June 19, 2012: The lady clearly saw the flying creature . . . The “dragon-pterodactyl” sat on a phone line near a storm channel.
  2. Same location as #1 above, 2009: The sister of the eyewitness of #1 sighting saw a dragon-like flying creature near the same location. She told nobody about her sighting until after she had learned about her sister’s encounter.
  3. Three “dragons” flew over the I-5 freeway in Los Angeles, just east of Griffith Park, in March of 2013.
  4. Just a few weeks after sighting #3, and less than two miles away, Devon Rhodriquez saw a strange flying creature: “not a feather in sight.”
  5. To the west of Griffith Park (on the other side of it), on March 24, 2018, another eyewitness encountered what may have been the same species as was seen by eyewitnesses #3 and #4. “I saw what I would call a pterosaur.”

You can watch this short video (3 min, 20 sec), so rather than list what’s in it, I’ll go into more details about these flying lights by answering three questions that are based upon comments people have sent me over the years.

Pterosaurs in the Southeastern Coastal States

Sightings have been reported in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, in addition to surrounding states.

In 2010, I received a report from a lady in North Carolina:

I was driving home from dropping a friend off at school.  When I was almost home (passed the Food Lion on Commerce Rd, going towards Country Club Rd in Jacksonville, [North Carolina]), I saw something HUGE above me in the sky.  It looked like a pale greenish white and smooth-skinned. It didn’t appear to have any feathers, and it had the tail with the diamond shape on the end.  I couldn’t believe my eyes, and I knew no one else really would.  It was probably . . . 100 ft away.  I just looked up the Rhamphorhynchus and it was definitely similar to what I saw.  It was headed towards Highway 17 and coming from Jacksonville Mall area (flying made the route different since it could fly passed all the things we had to drive around).

South Carolina Pterosaur

It was huge, as big as a plane, and looked very similar to the sketch created by Susan Wooten on your website. . . . I saw a huge pterodactyl looking creature, flying very high in the sky. The strangest thing about the sighting was how slow the wings were flapping and how high it was flying. . . . I remember shouting “that was a pterodactyl!”, but everyone else [around me] that saw it, seemed to shrug it off in disbelief.

Pterosaurs in Georgia

. . . my 16 year old son and I both saw [something that] resembled a small pterodactyl. Very large wingspan, but the odd thing was it had no discernible feathers. My son saw it better than I as I was driving, albeit slowly. He said it was a leathery-looking skin. Pointed head, diamond shape at the end of the tail. It appeared to me that its legs were kind of pointed backward.

Sighting in Jupiter, Florida

Late in 2008, I received an email from an eyewitness in Florida:

“Maybe about six years ago I was sitting outside my house with a buddy of mine talking (it was about 2 or 3 in the morning) and all of a sudden something caught both of our attention, above our heads. It was a flying creature that flew over our heads towards my backyard (behind us over the roof of the house) it was a biege brownish color, pointed wing tips, no feathers pointed beak and what made me think pterasoar was that long pointed thing protruding from the back of its head . . .. I live in Florida so I’ve seen my share of cranes and what not, but this WAS NOT a bird. . . .”

South Carolina Pterosaur

video on pterosaur sightings in South Carolina

By Jonathan Whitcomb, nonfiction author

I recently questioned another eyewitness of an apparent  living pterosaur in South Carolina; this sighting is not directly related to the one reported by Susan Wooten a few years ago (although it may be of the same species of flying creature). But in this newly reported account, there were many eyewitness, at least four or five; it was at a soccer camp in Clinton, South Carolina, around 1994.

. . . when I saw it and it was flying north. It was huge, as big as a plane, and looked very similar to the sketch created by Susan Wooten on your website. . . . I saw a huge pterodactyl looking creature, flying very high in the sky. The strangest thing about the sighting was how slow the wings were flapping and how high it was flying. Several parents who were watching the scrimmages and some of the other players on the sidelines saw the creature too. . . . I could not believe it. I remember shouting “that was a pterodactyl!”, but everyone else [around me] that saw it, seemed to shrug it off in disbelief.

I periodically search for stuff about pterodactyls on the internet. This time I searched “pterosaur sightings south carolina”, and your site popped up. Thanks for trying to find this creature. I don’t know why there are no real pictures or videos of sightings . . . but if this creature I saw, or its offspring, are still alive, then someone will get it on film eventually. Keep trying.

Pterosaurs (non-extinct ones) are sometimes reported in press releases.

Rhamphorhynchoid pterosaur in South Carolina

The strange creature flew gracefully over the highway, right in front of the car Susan Wooten was driving to Florence, South Carolina. Other drivers stopped their cars on the side of the road (in the general area of Bishopville) but Susan drove on, for she was following a friend and did not want to be separated from her. But what a creature it was!

According to this eyewitness, “It looked as big as any car, and had NO feathers, not like a huge crane or egret. . . . it swooped down over the highway and back up gracefully over the pines.” Years later, she learned of my investigations and reported her sighting. I have since interviewed her several times by email and she has convinced me that she saw basically what she described. I believe it was similar to the ropen of Papua New Guinea: a giant Rhamphornynchoid pterosaur.

Large long-tailed pterosaurs do not seem to be confined to South Carolina, however. I have also interviewed an eyewitness of two similar creatures in Georgia. They appeared to be of the same species, (but not necessarily the same species as the South Carolina pterosaur) seen on different mornings, and both were large, but they were not the same size; that is how the eyewitness concluded that there were two. Contrary to other descriptions of long-tailed pterosaurs, however, these two had rather fat tails and rather fat flanges at the end of their tails.

Third edition of "Live Pterosaurs in America"

Did you know that living pterosaurs have been reported in North America, even in the United States? Yes! Get the details of many eyewitness sighting reports  by purchasing a copy of this nonfiction book on Amazon.

Learn much more about the South Carolina sighting by Susan Wooten. But this cryptozoology book is packed with many more sightings, eyewitness encounters from across the United States: California, New Mexico, Texas, Florida, Georgia, New York, Wisconsin, Ohio, and many more states.

“The problem with science is that we think we know it all and that is far from reality. This book shows courage to continue the search. If you have an interest in cryptozoology you should read this.” Dale Reeder, Pennsylvania

For many weeks [first edition], this has been the best-selling nonfiction book (Amazon.com) about living pterosaurs. It is in pure cryptozoology genre, unlike some books about modern living pterosaurs and dinosaurs, with exciting observations by shocked eyewitnesses. Find out for yourself why many Americans are awakening to the knowledge that these creatures still fly, not just in remote jungles but right here in the United States.

[The third edition of this nonfiction cryptozoology book was published in November of 2011]
