Pterodactyls vs Human Life

Jonathan Whitcomb with sketch of a pterosaur

By the investigative journalist Jonathan Whitcomb

Over the past 18 years, I’ve encountered hundreds of reports of apparent modern pterosaurs, also called “flying dinosaurs” and “dragons”. Most of these have been direct contacts I’ve had with the eyewitnesses themselves, not the second-hand or third-hand accounts. Over many years, I’ve noticed that the vast majority of these encounters have been without any obvious evidences of ill intent on the part of the flying creatures: no apparent attacks  or aborted attacks against people. Yet I have also noticed the exceptions, and this now troubles me. On occasion, a person is in danger, sometimes resulting in injury and even death, although the evidence has mostly been circumstantial and less often first-hand reports given to me.

Jonathan Whitcomb in video "Pterodactyl Attacks are Dangerous"

From a Youtube video (Live Stream) about dangerous modern pterosaurs, especially about one attack in Oklahoma

Here’s part of a recent report I received regarding an attack against a four-year-old girl in western Oklahoma in 1977 (with minor editing for correct English and for keeping to the most important points):

I was four years old. My siblings (I am the last of five) just left for school. . . . no clouds . . . early fall. I was walking from the pumphouse/ chicken coop . . . I looked up behind me . . .

I know what I saw, because it was less than six feet above me. This thing was huge. I liken his body size to a Volkswagen bug. [It was] covered completely with brown / blackish fur [and had] no feathers. . . . the wings [had the] same color but like a bat.

I ducked down just enough, I guess, for it to be a miss for it. I stayed looking up [at it] this entire time. It opened its beak . . . I see teeth and at four I knew that wasn’t right . . .

That is a small part of the report that this lady sent me recently (early 2021), and she made it clear that this huge flying creature could easily have carried her away if it had gotten hold of her. She believes she is alive today because she ducked down close to the ground at the right time during that attack.

She mentioned something to me that led me to believe she thinks at least one other child in her area has been attacked and went missing without people realizing what happened.

Attacks From a Ropen in New Mexico?

. . . when human lives are in danger we need action. . . . Those trying to make sense of those missing persons in New Mexico could have been completely ignorant of attacks from large flying creatures in Mexico and in British Columbia, Canada. Yet why should Americans be immune to similar attacks in wilderness areas of the United States?

Pterodactyl Attacks are Dangerous

Youtube video on the channel Protect Animal Life:

Modern pterosaurs, often called “pterodactyls” have been encountered by people around the world, and the vast majority of encounters have been without any apparent danger to the persons who have observed these featherless flying creatures, according to Jonathan Whitcomb. Unfortunately, there appear to be exceptions . . .

.

Missing Children

The case of missing-child Garrett Bardsley has barely enough evidence to even mention in regard to potential attacks from a North American ropen. But even if only one child can be saved from being a victim, it will be worth all the efforts we can muster.

.

Missing Children Found in Caves

Before getting into the missing-persons cases of Mike McDonald in Arizona and Timothy Farmer in Australia, consider other reports that tie caves to ropens (or other modern pterosaurs). . . .

.

Pterodactyl Attack

Many years ago, a native fisherman in Papua New Guinea was attacked by what his people call a “kor”. Many years before that attack, apparently, the natives stopped fishing at night because of the danger from those flying creatures.

.

Do flying creatures attack people in Yosemite?

. . . These weird disappearances are not confined to Yosemite, nor even to the United States. Several factors do seem to tie together cases that are separated by long distances and sometimes separated by decades. To understand what may be happening in Yosemite National Park, we need to see in a broader sense. Look to Canada and to Mexico.

.

Do modern pterosaurs attack people?

The ancient Israelites, at the time of Moses, were terrified by the fiery flying serpent that caused many human deaths. Recent investigations suggest the fiery flying serpent of the Old Testament was not actually a snake but a Rhamphorhynchoid pterosaur. Even more recently, “pterodactyl attacks” against humans in Canada have been reported . . .

Pterodactyl Attack on a Fisherman

fisherman died after attack from a pterodacty

By the investigative journalist Jonathan Whitcomb

[Report a modern-pterosaur sighting]

About a tragic flying-cryptid encounter

On August 1, 2020, I uploaded to Youtube a video memorial for a native fisherman of the southwest Pacific who was attacked by an apparent living pterosaur. The man died three days later, yet he was able to kill the “kor” before it killed him. At least no other fisherman needs to worry about being attacked by that particular flying creature around the islands of northern Papua New Guinea at night.

Watch this video and see if it’s worth sharing with friends and family.

That attack against this fisherman could have been quite a few decades ago, perhaps in the middle of the 20th century. However that may be, it does seem to relate to other reports that large flying creatures sometimes attack people in other areas of Papua New Guinea.

Here is a still image from this mini-documentary:

a near collision between a plane and a large flying creature

The two pilots of this plane later told Whitcomb about the near collision

The following is taken from the description section of this video:

This second-or-third-hand account is not at all typical for videos on this channel, however. The vast majority of accounts of modern living pterosaurs, on “Protect Animal Life”, are first-hand accounts, when anyone is quoted regarding sightings. That’s part of why this encounter was included in this video number 77 rather than in one of the first videos created for this channel. Second-hand accounts are more likely to have become less accurate, in general, compared with first-hand ones.

That does not mean, however, that critically important points must be inaccurate in a second-hand account. Beware of assuming that the old Western dogma of universal extinctions of ALL species of pterosaurs can be adequately propped up by using old string and glue, so to speak: Systematically dismissing all accounts that are not first-hand and then rejecting first-hand accounts through a hodgepodge of unrelated excuses—That is hardly a scientific approach.

Now take a whirlwind tour of many years of investigations in cryptozoology, and prepare for a shock: At least two species of pterosaurs have survived, uncommon, not so much rare as widely, thinly distributed. Nocturnal pterosaurs have always lived among us . . .

The reality of ropens

Years ago, some skeptics speculated that reports of the ropen of Papua New Guinea came from people misidentifying the common fruit bats found there. Those critics, however, appear to have failed to take into account exactly what people report observing: something much larger and looking much different.

How Maleficent Flies Above “Crawl”

The flying personage Maleficent stands over an image of an alligator

By the investigative journalist Jonathan Whitcomb

What’s the relevance? It’s in the non-fictional stories, the reality of non-bat featherless flying creatures: A very few of the larger apparent pterosaurs, in several areas of the world, have been reported to sometimes attack people. That’s where they can seem to relate to the two films “Maleficent” and “Crawl.”

In the film “Maleficent,” the magical personage has huge wings with feathers, unlike pterosaurs, yet she is strikingly unlike any bird. Her wings have large claws, which can remind viewers of the wings of non-bird flying creatures: pterosaurs and bats.

“Crawl” got into public theaters on July 12, 2019, though I don’t watch R-rated movies (so I’ll not watch this one). Those people-killing alligators would have less impact on me anyway, for I raised crocodilians as pets when I was a young man and I know something about how they think. Hardly any alligator alive would likely react to a hurricane by attacking people.

People Attacked by Living Pterosaurs?

I now quote from page 16 of my nonfiction book Searching for Ropens and Finding God (fourth edition):

I read of a missionary in Venezuela who knew of a native tradition about a “giant bat” that had once terrified natives near the Erebato River. I sent him an email, asking about this legend of people being carried away. His reply intrigued me, for the natives don’t just repeat the story but practice a related custom: Because the creature was once seen defecating into a river after eating a human, the natives, from that time until now, never drink the water of that river. (Erebato means “feces of the bat.”) I concluded that if the legend were based on true events the “giant bat” in Venezuela might have been a giant pterosaur.

. . . you are awakened by what you fear most, glaring down at you. To humans, this monster should not even exist except in a dream. This one is real. Race out of your bedroom; it’s after you. Race out the front door; it follows. Search for a place to hide; it’s too late. You are exposed, surrounded by many monsters ready to feast. You have fallen into their trap. Featherless Flying Creature

As of mid-day, November 11, 2018, I do not know of any direct evidence that any people are in danger in this area of Utah, but a potential danger is there. Many of these flying creatures in North America eat fish, and my associates and I have no doubt that some of them rely on fish for food. We have eyewitness testimonies in a number of areas in the United States, accounts that clearly support the idea that at least one species of these flying creatures eats fish.

Recent Reports of Non-Extinct Pterosaurs

sketch of a modern pterosaur - by Eskin Kuhn

By modern-pterosaur expert Jonathan Whitcomb

The following two eyewitness reports may have limited relevance to strange missing-persons cases in North America, yet the potential danger of attacks from related flying creatures makes them worthy of note. Each report is given only in part here. I’ve also edited them for punctuation, spelling, etc.

Be aware that “recent” refers to when I received the reports, not when the eyewitnesses encountered the apparent pterosaurs.

Sighting in New Jersey

After communicating with her through emails, I had a long phone conversation with this eyewitness. I concluded that her honesty credibility is very high (this is no hoax). Her sighting was in Long Valley, New Jersey, in about 2016, and she reported it to me in June of 2018.

She wants to be anonymous for now, because of her present employment, yet she told me that she will, when that changes, allow her name to be used in publications on this subject of living pterosaurs.

At about 4:00 a.m., or a little before, she stopped her car at a stop sign. The huge flying creature then hopped over to her car and looked through the glass right into her eyes. She described this animal to me and mentioned that it was bigger than her car.

[It made a] slow gesture . . . when it tilted the head to look inside of the car, it looked at me. I was so taken by that specific move that I was still and frozen into its eyes. I did not want to take my eyes away from what I was seeing. I did not want to check anything else because I did not want to loose that specific moment of who was starring at me.

. . . It made unusual gestures when it opened the leathery wing. It pulled a bit back from the side of the window [and] kind of stretched to get tall and . . . then it stretched the wings. It made three [movements] to open the wings: bat leathery thick wings . . . I realized that this thing was huge . . .

Sighting in Central California

In about 2004, two eyewitnesses saw an apparent pterosaur in Kerman, which is about 15 miles west of Fresno, California. The following is a small portion of an email I received from one of those eyewitnesses. (Both of these persons is anonymous. One of them may have been attempting to steal cable service, from a telephone pole, at the time of the pterosaur sighting.)

. . . the kid on the ground is pointing in the sky and said LOOKOUT. I was still transferring to the other side of the pole, but I was looking and here it came. Funny thing about it is it was very dark out but I could see him and his colors very well. . . . his wings were I’d say 14 feet wingspan. As he was coming down towards me, his wings were wide open kind [like a] parachute.

. . . his wings were very similar to bat wings. He had hands in the middle his wings and a claw on the wings like bats do . . .

I suspect that these two eyewitnesses in central California saw a bioluminescent pterosaur.

Missing Persons and Living Pterosaurs

When a person is alone in a wilderness area in the United States, a large hungry ropen may attack, subduing the human by a mist or vapor that is debilitating when inhaled by prey. This may explain why human victims, when found alive, are asleep or unconscious or in a state that rescuers may describe as “confused” or “disoriented.”

.

Pterodactyls alive in California

A 38-year-old woman in a residential neighborhood of Lakewood, California, just northeast of Long Beach, reported a “dragon-pterodactyl” that had no feathers but a long tail with a “dragon” “triangle” at the of that tail.
