Modern Sightings of Living Pterosaurs or Pterodactyls
(Especially Rhamphorhynchoids) |
Since 2004, many new web pages have come up about live ptero-dactyls or pterosaurs in Papua New Guinea and elsewhere. The most common seems to be a Rhamphorhynchoid. Since dinosaurs and pterosaurs have been thought extinct for millions of years, (It’s taught as “science,” but then what is “science?”) this has caused some controversy. Examine the web sites on this and related subjects. You decide if it’s plausible; scientifically it’s possible. |
The following include brief quotations from the web sites:
To document and analyze eyewitness accounts of living pterosaurs or pterosaur-like creatures and to support expeditions and investigations that may provide relevant evidence . . .
Umboi Island Expeditions, 2004 Jonathan Whitcomb returned to the U.S. on Oct 15th after staying two weeks on Umboi Island.
Missionary Jim Blume: living pterosaur investigations . . . have wingspans over 10 feet. They are said to have long bodies with tails and comb-like structures on their heads . . .
Indava of the mainland of Papua New Guinea (2006 expedition) Paul Nation’s short video of the two indavas was examined by Cliff Paiva, a missile defense physicist, who declared that the images of the two lights were not of meteors, camp fires, auto headlights, a paste-on-the-background hoax, or other common things.
Summary of Whitcomb Expedition of 2004 . . . I came back with notes and video from interviewing about 17 reliable eyewitnesses . . .
Umboi Island ropen eyewitness: Gideon . . . he saw a giant pterosaur-like creature when he was with several other boys . . .
Umboi Island ropen eyewitness: Jonah Jim . . . his testimony confirmed that the moving light is the ropen seen by Gideon, Wesley, and Mesa in the daytime.
Umboi Island ropen eyewitness: Michael (Maikel) . . . other reports of grave robbery resemble Michael’s testimony . . .
Umboi Island ropen eyewitness: Leonard . . . concerning the ropen, which some Westerners believe is a giant Rhamphorhynchoid pterosaur . . .
Umboi Island ropen eyewitnesses: Mesa, Wesley, and others Wesley verified the account of his brother. He was one of the boys who went to the crater lake and saw the giant creature.
Guessman and Woetzel explore Umboi Island While near the village of Arot, Woetzel got a brief view of the ropen just as it was passing behind one of the nearby mountains.
Interview methods of Guessman and Woetzel This painstaking attention to detail helped to verify the authenticity of the unique characteristics of the ropen sightings.
Pastor Jacob Kepas sees a seklo-bali on mainland When Jakob Kepas was 12 years old, he saw a strange huge creature fly over his village.
Rhamphorhynchoid pterosaur-like ropen over Lake Pung . . . they saw a giant “ropen” fly over the water. The boys ran home in terror and the memory of that fear lasted for years.
Are Dragons Pterosaurs? Let’s be careful not to rush to conclusions about dragons, for fantasies, though fictional, are often based upon some truth. The story of Little Red Riding Hood is fictional, but grandmothers and wolves are both real.
Credibility of Umboi Island Eyewitnesses . . . Gideon gave this expression. He showed nonverbally what he then said: “No feathers”
Flying Dinosaurs in Papua New Guinea From 1994 through 2004 about seven Americans have intermittently (and usually two or three at a time) visited remote islands of Papua New Guinea
Living Pterodactyls It seems a World War II veteran says that he saw a pterodactyl in New Guinea in 1944.
Early Expeditions to Umboi Island (living pterosaurs investigations) Carl Baugh, of the Creation Evidence Museum, went to Papua New Guinea in 1994 and 1996 after hearing of the accounts indicating pterosaur-like creatures . . .
Perth, Australia sighting, 1997 In December, 1997 my husband and I both sighted a huge creature flying over a densely populated area, while we were out walking . . .
Opai Village on Umboi Island Some have been interviewed in regard to what is thought to be a pterosaur or pterodactyl that flies over the village.
Gomlongon Village on Umboi Island Some visitors have looked for the strange ropen that lives on this island.
Mount Bel on Umboi Island Recent investigators have preferred Mount Tolo for searching for the ropen.
Live Pterosaurs in the Southwest Pacific Numerous testimonies suggest nocturnal Rhamphorhynchoid-like creatures, having names like “ropen” and “duwas” (Don’t confuse with “duah”), live in coastal areas . . .
Ropens: Live Pterosaurs in Papua New Guinea Duane Hodgkinson, now a flight instructor in Livingston, Montana, in 1944 was stationed near Finschhafen, in what was then called New Guinea. When he and his buddy walked into a clearing . . .
Press Release: Whitcomb’s Book, Searching for Ropens An investigator who explored Umboi Island, Papua New Guinea, declares that a large flying creature reported by an American soldier in 1944 is the same species of long-tailed featherless creature known as ropen.
Press Release: Pterosaur-like Creatures Reported in Papua New Guinea Intermittent expeditions on Umboi Island, Papua New Guinea, from 1994 through 2004, resulted in the compilation of eyewitness testimonies that substantiated a hypothesis that pterosaurs may not be extinct. . . . The conflict between evolution and creation took a new form . . .
Press Release for New Hampshire (Rhamphorhynchoid pterosaur) The glowing form seen one night in 2004, in Papua New Guinea, by a New Hampshire businessman, was probably a pterosaur, according to the newly published book “Searching for Ropens.”
Press Release for Texas (Creation Evidence Museum) . . . the pioneers were Carl Baugh and Paul Nation, both of the Creation Evidence Museum in Glen Rose, Texas . . .
Press Release: Pterosaur-like . . . not Flying Fox The newly published book “Searching for Ropens,” by Jonathan Whitcomb, disputes an old idea that they are misidentifications of Flying Fox fruit bats.

Dinosaurs In Literature, History and Art When describing the Ropen, a characteristic often mentioned that is not included in pterosaur recreations are dermal humps along the back.
Cryptozoology, Living Dinosaurs, and Origins Attacking the Evolutionary view of dinosaurs . . . the Biblical view that man and dinosaurs have lived together and may still live.
Pterosaur of New Guinea? A new book has been released that’s stirring up some controversy. Entitled Searching for Ropens, its author is Jonathan Whitcomb . . .
Is the Ropen a Rhamphorhynchoid Pterosaur? I began my passionate investigation of the ropen around the summer of 2003. In September of 2004, I found an interpreter . . .
The "ropen" of New Guinea (“Genesis Park” site) . . . stories of a flying creature called the Ropen (“demon flyer”) began to be reported.
Does a Living Pterodactyl Fly Over Papua New Guinea? During World War II, an American soldier walked into a clearing near Finschhafen (New Guinea) . . . The “pterodactyl” seen by the two soldiers seems to be the same creature that is called “ropen” on nearby Umboi Island. (sighting by Duane Hodgkinson)
A psychologist sees what he describes like a pterosaur It was so unusual. I actually heard it before I saw it. A slow flap . . . flap . . flapping sound. . . . this creature with a longish narrow tail . . . (no feathers in sight)

Why is it Believed the Ropen is a Pterosaur? No known bat or bird or other flying creature fits the description of the ropen; descriptions do suggest a Rhamphorhynchoid pterosaur.
What is a Ropen? Before dismissing the idea that Rhamphorhynchoid pterosaurs are still living, please consider eyewitness testimonies.
Why is it believed that only one giant ropen lives on Umboi Island This idea in no way implies that this species is in danger of extinction.
Living Pterodactyls—Giant Flying Creature Seen over Perth . . . we do know that it was definitely a living creature. . . . I was so totally shocked, amazed, awed and bewildered at the same time. This was com- pletely out of the reality I had grown up to know. . . . it has changed me.
Duah, Duwas, and Ropen—(maybe one living pterosaur) . . . Some of the names are seklo-bali, ropen, and duwas. Jonathan Whitcomb . . . declares that these various names refer to the same species.
Bioluminescence (with a reference to the ropen) (basics of bioluminescence with examples of bioluminescent organisms)
Creation versus Evolution How could pterosaurs still be living when “science” declares that creatures like dinosaurs and pterosaurs never lived in the time of humans? In reality, that declaration is not “science” but an assumption commonly mentioned in science text books. It is an axiom or core belief, not a proven fact.
Dinosaurs Alongside Humans (Technically, dinosaurs are not pterosaurs.)
A Response to a criticism of living-pterosaurs research (This relates to the writings of the critic Glen Kuban.)
The case against pterosaur extinction This is not a treatise on pterosaur biology nor a detailed history of scientific discoveries. It is an investigation of why the idea of ancient pterosaur extinction (millions of years ago) is so prevalent in Western society and why alternate ideas should be considered. It is more of a study of human mentality and reasoning than it is a study of pterosaur biology.
Searching for Ropens (about the book) How could a living pterodactyl elude scientists for decades, and why did a World War II veteran’s testimony receive so little attention?
Susan Wooten, of Greenville, South Carolina, was driving from Greenville to Florence (about 1989) when she saw a giant creature glide over the highway in front of the car.
Introduction to South Carolina Pterosaur Sighting She was sure that what she interpreted as a tail was indeed a tail and that she saw the legs separately. She was also sure of a head appendage.
