Do Pterodactyls Fly

in a 21st Century Sky?

In the book Searching for Ropens, the author declares that ancient-pterosaur- extinction ideas are ill-founded, in other words, the idea that all species of pterosaurs are long gone is only an assumption. The book gives many examples: eyewitnesses of apparent living pterosaurs.

A brief internet search reveals many web pages about the “ropen” of Umboi Island: the creature that glows at night and, in the daylight, looks like a giant pterodactyl.

There are similar accounts of sightings in other areas, especially on the main-land of Papua New Guinea. The natives in various areas have different names for what investigators declare is one species (or possibly two species) of Rhamphorhynchoid pterosaur.

A common mistake in reacting to these reports relates to what are classified as Mesozoic strata. Some people think that the absence of pterosaur fossils in strata  that  are  “younger”  than  Mesozoic  strata  indicates  that pterosaurs lived no later than about 65 million years ago. The problem with that  approach  is  that  a  significant factor in dating strata is in determining what kinds of fossils it contains. When it contains a pterosaur fossil, it is normally dated as Mesozoic. The foundation of this approach is the assumption that pterosaurs lived millions of years ago. This means that these standard models cannot be used as if evidence against the idea that pterosaurs are living in the 21st Century. They could live now.

Before dismissing these accounts of living pterosaurs as rumors or just superstitious legends, why not learn the details first?

Brief overview of Creation vs. Evolution (& living-pterosaur ideas)

Reports of pterodactyls in New Guinea, in particular during World War II, cannot now be relegated to misidentifications of Flying Fox fruit bats. The “pterodactyls” are much too different in the descriptions.

Pterodactyls (Pterosaurs)

Duane Hodgkinson, of Montana, maintains that he saw a giant “pterodactyl,” in 1944, on the mainland of what is now called “Papua New Guinea.” Compare Hodgkinson’s sighting to Hennessy’s.
