Le Soldat Duane Hodgkinson

En Nouvelle-Guinée, en 1944, deux soldats américains rencontré un étrange animal. Il était proche de Finschhafen, dans le milieu de la journée. Les ailes de l’animal étaient de la taille d’un petit avion — neuf mètres d’envergure.

Les deux soldats étaient à moins de 30 mètres de l’animal. Ils pouvaient voir la longue queue. Duane Hodgkinson était un de ces soldats. Il pensait que la longueur de la queue était de trois à cinq mètres, voire plus. Hodgkinson n’ai pas vu de plumes.

En 2005, Hodgkinson a été interviewé par Garth Guessman. Voici une partie de cette interview, tirée du livre de nonfiction Live Pterosaurs in Australia and in Papua New Guinea.

Hodgkinson: “. . . It was huge. . . . as it took off . . . the wing flaps were maybe about one or two seconds in frequency, and the brush all below was totally swaying from the down-rush of the air . . . It turned around and came back, and it was up probably I would say maybe fifty or a hundred feet above us . . . We got a perfect side view of it. I was just totally fascinated. . . . It had the large appendage out the back of its head, and it had a long neck. . . . I was so fascinated with the appendage out the back of his head, and I was watching that, as he flew by, and I didn’t pay attention to what the end of his tail looked like.”

La créature volante géante observée par les deux soldats n’était pas comme les oiseaux ou les chauves-souris. Le cou de l’animal était d’environ un mètre de long ou un peu plus.
