King pawn openings have been popular for over two hundred years. An avenue is opened for the white-squared bishop (the bishop on f1, see chess notation), and the advanced pawn controls the square d5.
Black has many possible replies, the most common including:
e5 (with dozens of possible basic opening variations)
e6 The French Defense
c5 The Sicilian (very popular since the 1960’s) |
