The Opening: Choose one |

Two of the most popular first moves for white are e4 and d4 (see chess notation). Either moves opens up a way for a bishop to be developed. In general, king-pawn openings (e4) lead to more open positions than queen-pawn openings (d4). Beware of the unfortunately-popular beginners’ mistake of trying to develop rooks early. Rook openings are serious mistakes in strategy, even though they are popular with many beginners. If you have tried to get your rooks out early, consider changing. |
