Advance the e-pawn, but promote it to a knight (not a queen). The black king will then be in check; after the black king moves, the white knight can capture the black queen. The other pawn (at a7) will soon be a queen, so white can win.
In actual games, it is rare for a pawn to promote to a knight. Still, this exercise illustrates the importance of being able to foresee all possible moves: to look “outside the box.” |
