Taking the open-minded perspective that some species of pterosaurs may still be living, albeit they mostly seem to be nocturnal and uncommon
Cryptozoology
The study of hidden or unclassified animals---that is cryptozoology. It is not a branch of biology but an active approach to investigating eyewitness accounts of cryptids, and an active encouraging of zoologists to investigate the possibilities.
Lucy Evelyn Cheesman
Cheesman observed strange flying lights on the mainland of New Guinea, probably related to the ropen lights of Umboi Island. She was a British biologist (esp entomologist) who explored New Guinea in the early-to-mid twentieth century.

Mr. Brian Hennessy
Brian Hennessy, a professional psychologist, probably observed a ropen (1971) when he was on Bougainville Island, New Guinea. There was no evidence for any feathers on the long-tailed flying creature that had a "horn" like structure coming out of the back of its head.
Hodgkinson-Hennessy
Compare the head silhouettes chosen by Hennessy (top) and Hodgkinson (bottom), for the flying creatures that the two eyewitnesses independently observed in New Guinea.
Mr. Duane Hodgkinson
Duane Hodgkinson and his army buddy, in 1944, saw a huge flying creature in New Guinea. The "pterodactyl" had a winspan similar to that of a Piper Tri-Pacer airplane.
Finschhafen Harbor PNG
A few miles inland from this harbor, in 1944 Duane Hodgkinson observed a huge "pterodactyl" with a tail "at least" ten or fifteen feet long. (photo by Jonathan Whitcomb, during the 2004 expedition)
Two video cameras
This is part of a late-2012 video-surveillance setup at a not-yet-disclosed location in North America. We hope the ropen observed here will return and that we'll get a good image recorded (day or night).
