Pterodactyl Sighting in Mexico

sketch of a modern pterosaur - by Eskin Kuhn

By cryptozoologist Jonathan D. Whitcomb

Here’s part of an email I received recently [corrected for English]:

I’ve been talking to my mother about the pterodactyl like creature she saw about 15 years ago. . . . in Lázaro Cardenas, Michoacán (Mexico) . . . There were cats, iguanas, bats, raccoons (at night) and even once a baby crocodile pass through . . .

. . . in 2007 . . . One morning, around 7:00 am, my mother left the house . . . about 80 meters far from the house she noticed what she described . . . a small pterodactyl like creature climbing up . . . the tennis court fence (she was about 15-20 meters far from the creature . . .)

. . . she ran back to the house very scared, and told my father, who was having his breakfast. He went out to take a look, but the creature was not there anymore.

Physical characteristics described by my mother:

1) Small pterodactyl like animal. Leathered. . . . Wingspan, as they weren’t completely open, could be a meter (bit more or less)

2) No feathers.

3) No hair.

4) Color: Medium dark brown, similar to boxes.

5) Sharp peak, as in pterosaurs, but not huge, about two feet long (no teeth observed)

6) Claws on its two paws, it was using them to climb the tennis court fence.

7) Two wings were moving gently as it was climbing, but weren’t wide open; she noticed also [these] kind of bone rods on them.

I already have shown her different types of big fruit bats found on the internet and even this hammerhead bat, thinking that maybe it was a bat, but she would not recognize them as the creature she saw. . . .

Additional sighting report details (or lack)

Because the animal was climbing a fence and because the lady did not observe it for long, certain details could not be observed: She did not know whether or not it had a head crest or a long tail.

The lady’s son also told me, “between 2007 and 2008 most of the wild “home cats” living there disappeared. We never saw dead cat bodies; at the time we thought maybe the new administration eradicated them.

Pterodactyl Sightings Reported on Videos

For three+ years, I have produced and uploaded to Youtube videos about modern pterosaurs, a.k.a. “pterodactyls”. As of mid-2022, this channel (Protect Animal Life) has well over 200 active videos on these amazing featherless flying creatures . . .

Potential Pterodactyl Attacks Against People

I saw two of them when I was seven with my two younger sisters on a beach in Florida at night. They hovered right over us in one spot silently looking at us like we were dinner.

Pterosaur Sightings Worldwide

From Jonathan Whitcomb: After my expedition on Umboi Island in the southwest Pacific in 2004, I returned home to California, anxious to publicize what I had learned from native eyewitnesses of the ropen. Within a few years, I learned another shocking truth about these flying creatures: They live in many areas of the planet . . .

Pterodactyl sighting in Texas

Alex Salinas was looking out across a field in Weslaco, Texas, in around the year 1998, when he saw something flying towards him. At first, he assumed it was a crane, but it was flying alone at night, which was not what cranes did in that area of southeast Texas. . . . it was not only not a crane but unlike any kind of bird. With a leathery appearance, it had a long tail and a bone-like head crest.

More Pterosaur Sightings in Mexico

Within the past few weeks, I’ve received two reports of apparent pterosaurs in Mexico, one in the north and one around Mexico City. Both reports were in Spanish. Here’s part of the report from northern Mexico. I wonder if it relates to the Marfa Lights.

Chihuahua, Mexico, Sighting (Spanish)

. . . . el animal de pronto dejo de brillar.

Rough English Translation (sighting in Chihuahua)

. . . the reason for this message is to report a sighting of an animal . . . [I wonder if] what I have investigated is a ropen or pterodactyl. It happened about 10 years old at a dam near my city, which is in the state of Chihuahua in Mexico . . . That day we were in it [in or near the water behind the dam] because we went out for the day fishing. But the breakdown of the boat [left] my family . . . on the shore of the dam. My cousin Daniel and a gentleman friend [of?] my father (at that time I was fifteen and my cousin fourteen) spent the hours [in the dark]. . . . suddenly heard a loud flapping in the distance, which, at the time, we [thought] was the wind . . . when suddenly in front of us, about 500 meters away on the water, a phosphorescent green light began to flash . . . The animal was shaped like a dinosaur and featherless, flying in a strange way, not like a bird. The three of us had the impression that it was very large . . . the animal suddenly stopped shining.

Living Pterosaur in Mexico

A live pterosaur is hardly restricted to the USA. Large flying creatures fly wherever they choose, regardless of political boundaries. With reports of living pterosaurs in Americans states like California, Arizona, Texas, and Arkansas, it is no wonder that people in Mexico also report those same strange featherless “birds.”

Ancient Pterosaur Depictions

“An ancient Mayan relief sculpture of a peculiar bird with reptilian characteristics has been discovered in Totonacapan, in northeastern section of Veracruz, Mexico. José Diaz-Bolio, a Mexican archaeologist-journalist responsible for the discovery, says there is evidence that the serpent-bird sculpture, located in the ruins of Tajín, is not merely the product of Mayan flights of fancy, but a realistic representation of an animal that lived during the period of the ancient Mayans – 1,000 to 5,000 years ago. . . .”

Sightings in Mexico

. . . about one and a half miles away, a huge black bird-like creature came from the more mountainous region to my left, and flew toward the ocean . . . wingspan about equal to the length of the taller palm trees, I thought about 30 to 40 feet. The wings moved very slowly, almost touching on the downward swing . . .

Ropens and Marfa Lights in Texas

Reports of apparent living pterosaurs also come from Mexico and the Cuba. In fact, one sighting was of two   glowing flying pterodactyls seen by two women from a cruise ship in the Caribbean.

Living Pterosaur in Mexico

A live pterosaur is hardly restricted to the USA. Large flying creatures fly wherever they choose, regardless of political boundaries. With reports of living pterosaurs in Americans states like California, Arizona, Texas, and Arkansas, it is no wonder that people in Mexico also report those same strange featherless “birds.” But should we take that word in the literal sense?

Featherless Birds

When an eyewitness tells me about a bird that has no feathers, I take the word “bird” in context, not as a scientific classification of an avian species. Consider first the details of description.

Take the 1944 Finschhafen sighting. Duane Hodgkinson assumed it was a bird, when he first saw something start to run through the tall grass, as the creature flapped its wings. It may have taken about a second for him to realize it was no bird. Let’s remember that perspective when we encounter the avian word from eyewitnesses who never before considered the possibility of a modern living pterosaur. The creatures observed are featherless, but it’s easier to use the word “bird,” and it sounds less shocking than “dragon” or “pterosaur.”

Eyewitness Accounts From Mexico

Mexicans may use their own word for “bird” (pajaro in Spanish) when referring to a large featherless flying creature. And why should those apparent pterosaurs avoid Mexico when they have been seen in Cuba? Consider some brief sighting reports.

According to what one of my associates has reported to me (and this man has explored in Mexico, searching for physical evidence for modern pterosaurs), in at least one area in Mexico, sightings are not rare:

Two specific sightings, and I interviewed the respective brother [of the persons who] made the original sightings. I have not made it into the mountains to confirm the killing of one large prehistoric bat type bird that was shot by police and military, and when placed in their military pickup it tilted from the weight of the animal.

This large, leathery, killed animal was in the same mountain city as the large white bat type bird that was seen by a woman and her husband run from their home after killing 18 of their chickens. It cut the wire with its claws according to the girls brother. She was 29 years old at the time of the sighting.

I also talked with the brother of [a] 24 year old student . . . who was returning home late one night, (11:30 pm), and thought he saw a drunk man in the middle of the highway, to discover the drunk man could fly, and [the eyewitness drove away] from this animal for 11 [kilometers] at very high speeds . . . as the bird flew beside him and attempted to get at him thru the windows. Seemed to follow the lights of the car.

Modern Flying Dragons

Old stories and ancient history—those contain the word “dragon,” and some of the accounts involve large creatures that fly, and sometimes those flying creatures resemble pterosaurs . . .

Living Pterosaurs

To the best of my knowledge, this is the first time this subject, of the four basic types of credibility, has been explored in any book or web page or scientific paper, at least regarding the concept of eyewitness reports of apparent pterosaurs.

Live Pterosaurs in America, third edition, by Jonathan David Whitcomb

From pages 60 and 61 in this nonfiction cryptozoology book:

In mid-2007, a man in New Mexico emailed me about his two sightings. “. . . me and a close friend, who now has a masters in biology, were hiking during the midday sun at [a] box canyon and something blocked the sun for a moment. We both looked up to see what did that and saw a large flying animal. It had a 20-30 foot wingspan and was about the same length long. It had a long tail with [a] seeming spike at the end. Its head was very pterodactyl shape with a fluted back pointy head. . . .”

Correlating Sightings of Flying Lights

Flying Lights in Mexico and in Florida

The above images were analyzed by the missile defense physicist Cliff Paiva, of BSM Research Associates. Paiva seems to have no doubt that these two glowing objects are closely related, even if they are large bioluminescent flying creatures not yet classified in Western science. One video was recorded in Florida; the other,  in Mexico. And these are only two sightings.

Yakima Lights

Many flashes were parallel to the river. . . . there were many fish . . . Prime hunting grounds for fish-eating birds. Only these things fish at night with bioluminescence. At first I thought I was just seeing shooting stars, but they were all parallel to the river and close to the horizon. Next I noticed that when the cloud cover came in, I could still see the flashes. They were under the cloud cover.

Sightings of large glowing flying creatures—those have also been reported, in modern times, in widely diverse areas: Papua New Guinea, Los Angeles County, California; the Caribbean Sea; and in England.

Cheesman Lights and Marfa Lights

On the surface, it might seem better to tie the Cheesman lights to the ropen light of Umboi Island, Papua New Guinea, for all those lights, as individual lights, seem to last for only about five or six seconds or so, and individual CE-III Marfa Lights may last much longer. But the indava lights (seen just a couple of mountain ranges or so south of where Cheesman was) sometimes do glow longer than a few seconds.

I have noticed many Youtube videos that require attention: various flying lights, mostly without the vidoegrapher or uploader being aware of the possibility of bioluminescent flying creatures.
