Another Pterosaur Sighting in Georgia

image_pdfimage_print

On Wednesday, July 18, 2012, a lady was driving with her two sons on Highway 27, in Franklin, Georgia, around 8:15 a.m., when they saw what she called a “flying dinosaur.” In her email to me, she said, “I was so shocked at what I was seein I started yealing to my sons to look up look up. I ask my oldest ‘do you see what I’m seeing?’ and he goes ‘Wow!'”

The lady’s son told his mother that it looked like a “pterodactyl.”

I asked the lady some questions:

Q: Did it have a tail?

A: Yes it it had a tail, a long one.

Q: Was the creature flapping its wings or just gliding?

A: It was just gliding across [the] road . . .

Q: About how high off the ground was the creature?

A: I can’t really say how high but low enough that I knew it wasn’t a big bird.

. . . about a year and a half ago, maybe a little more, I saw what I  believe to be the same animal from directly below, traveling fast . . . The tail is what riveted me, you could see the shape on the end . . . it stuck straight out.

Those two flying creatures might be of a rare species, normally nocturnal but temporarily displaced by a storm, perhaps a pair flying in daylight out of necessity. If they are nocturnal, Georgia certainly has many places for creatures to hide while sleeping in daylight.

Cover, back and front, of Live Pterosaurs in America - nonfiction book

Third edition of the nonfiction book Live Pterosaurs in America, by Whitcomb

For a previous (2nd) edition, an Amazon.com review (with 5 stars) includes:

This book has been on my shelf for almost a year now [second edition of Live Pterosaurs in America]. I pick it up every now and then and a part of me becomes more impressed by the book every time. . . .

I highly recommend this. You may find yourself almost believing in it, although that is not even the authors intent! Whitcomb painstakingly reviews every account for credibility and reason. This man is not a crank. He tries to weed out would be hoaxes and miss-identification. This is not a guy looking to create evidence to confirm his own beliefs. . . . Whitcomb will have you suspending disbelief again as he shares his collection of personal accounts from Americans. . . .

One thing I always found interesting about the pterosaur sightings is their backwards familiarity to the big foot phenonmenon. Many people reported seeing big foot and sightings increase every year, but this was after the famous big foot film found in the 60s. The exact opposite is taking place with pterosaur sightings, in that, people report their stories from years ago after Whitcombs books and others. . . . people are not fabricating stories based on a sub-cultural influence like the big foot film (where every noise a hiker hears in the woods is blamed on big foot). . . .

. . . this is definitely the book to get . . .  I do believe the author tried hard to deliver these stories and was very good at it. This is well written and very hard to put down.

From another 5-star review for the second edition of this cryptozoology book:

I couldn’t put this book down. It is absolutely fascinating to read about eyewitness accounts of the people who have seen these creatures. To learn about these testimonies from such an open minded perspective is refreshing in the extreme! . . .

I highly recommend this book to anyone! . . . Jonathan Whitcomb needs to write more books!

  1. on dec 10, 2012 Myself and wife were riving home at around 1:30 am on Briscoe rd in Loganville, Ga. As we crested a hill our light came down across a large flying animal that i instantly thought looked like a pterodactyl…i didnt say anything for about 30 seconds and didnt slow down….I asked my wife if she saw that…she replied “do you mean that f***ing pterodactyl that just flew in front of us….yeah i saw it”. I tryed to put it out of my head but I cant…I saw what i saw and I feel odd posting this…but……

    1. Thank you, Brian, for sharing the sighting you and your wife had in Loganville, Georgia, last month. Georgia now seems to be a hot state for pterosaur sightings, when we consider the encounter that David Schroder had in Towns County (northern Georgia) in that same month of December, 2012.
